All the Ways We Can Be Our Best

Aging doesn’t have to mean loss of health and diminished strength.  Scientific advancements enable us to live a healthy lifestyle and be our best, at every age!

In my series, Best at Every Age! I’ve talked about how a positive mindset is key to cultivating a youthful outlook, and shared information about some important vitamins that can help us maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. I’ve also explored actions we can take to slow aging. I’ve talked about effective anti-aging tips for skin, offered ways to keep our mental clarity, explored the 7 dimensions of wellness, and offered helpful ways to embrace our age – right now.

In this post, let’s look at some natural methods to deal with everyday aches and pains.

5 Natural Ways to Heal Aches and Pains

This time of year, I’m more prone to aches than during the warmer months. Experiencing daily aches and pains can be tiring, and the only thing worse than dealing with chronic pain is dealing with the side effects (and possible dependency) of medication used to help treat body aches and pains. Using natural remedies can offer a first line of defense against common aches and pains, before we reach for the pills. Below is a list of five natural ways to help heal your body’s aches and pains.

5 natural ways to heal aches and pains

1. Physical Therapy and/or Exercise

One of the best tactics for pain management can be exercise. You may not want to get up and move when you’re in pain, but exercising can help reduce your body’s response to pain.

If your pain is due to a mechanical imbalance in your body or an injury, then you may want to consider physical therapy. Physical therapists can help alleviate pain by strengthening weak joints and retraining your movement patterns. According to Movement For Life.com, physical therapy can help restore your range of motion and strengthen your body.

2. Acupressure and Myofascial Release

Both of these techniques can help to relieve muscle pain and tension. Many times you can get tension spots in the fascia. Acupressure can help release the trigger points and painful spots allowing for less painful movements and eventually less pain during the day.

MikeReinold.com offers some simple instructions for myofascial release and recommends applying pressure for 10-30 seconds. Even if it hurts, the pressure will cause the release of the trigger point. Without extended pressure there will be no release.

3. Herbs and Spices

Many herbs and spices can invoke anti-inflammatory responses which will cause a drop in pain response. Products containing capsaicin, derived from spicy chili peppers, can be applied topically to help relieve pain. Gels or lotions using Arnica Montana can also be effective for bruising or swelling. Other herbs can reduce inflammation when taken orally. Turmeric, ginger and cinnamon are all excellent spices for reducing inflammation in the body and reducing pain caused by chronic inflammation. Adding these healing herbs to teas and breakfast items like oatmeal will help increase your intake. Make sure to use quality herbs for best results.

4. Epsom Salt

An Epsom Salt bath is my go-to for aches. Web M.D. recommends soaking in an Epsom salt bath to relieve pain for occasional stiffness and many chronic conditions. Epsom salt works by breaking down into magnesium sulfate that’s absorbed through your skin. While the theory hasn’t been proven, it has been shown that soaking in warm water can loosen stiff joints.

5. Meditation

Training your mind to meditate when in pain can help you reduce your body’s response to pain. Meditation has been shown to produce lasting results and can be more effective than distraction techniques that are often used for pain management. PainDoctor.com notes that with practice meditation can significantly reduce the perception of pain.

There are many options for learning how to meditate. You can learn mindful meditation techniques in classes, through audio recordings and even on YouTube. The great thing about meditation is that you can bring it with you anywhere. Once learned, the benefits of mindful meditation can be seen in as little as three 20-minute sessions a week.
