7 Amazing Health Benefits of Turmeric

I’ve been reading up on medicinal herbs lately for my infographic about how to grow herbs in pots. There’s so much good information on Turmeric, I thought it deserved it’s own post.

Amazing Health Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric originates from the Curcuma plant, and is commonly known for its spiciness and use in curried dishes. While extensively used in both Chinese and Indian cultures, Western medicine has been slow to notice the health benefits of this pungent herb. Anti-Inflammatory

Because of it’s anti-inflammatory properties, Eastern cultures have traditionally used Turmeric to control inflammation, as well as to fight infection and heal. Curcumin, the oil derived from turmeric, has been shown to be as effective as many anti-inflammatory drugs in many studies. The key difference is there are no side effects associated with curcumin oil. This is good news for those who suffer from joint conditions, such as arthritis, where inflammation plays a key role in intensifying chronic pain.

Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease affect many people worldwide and seem to be on the rise. Although researchers are not entirely sure how it works, studies in mice show that curcumin oil improved cell functions and reduced symptoms. Certain symptoms were almost completely removed, such as mucosal ulceration.

Indigestion and Heartburn Relief

Because it stimulates the gallbladder and increases bile production, the German Commission E approves of Turmeric to alleviate symptoms of heartburn and indigestion.

Heart Disease

Studies show Turmeric provides a protective effect for the heart. Initial research shows it can help reduce plaque build-up in the heart, a key contributor to heart attacks. It may also help to prevent oxidized cholesterol that damages blood vessels, a contributing factor in many types of heart disease, such as heart attacks, atherosclerosis, and strokes.

Turmeric Can Delay Diabetes

Research has shown that Turmeric can actually delay the onset of diabetes. In one study, participants took either a placebo or curcumin tablets, and at the end of the study not one participant who had taken the curcumin had developed diabetes. Researches believe anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are the reason for the results.

Cancer Prevention

Turmeric’s antioxidant properties may help protect cells against cancer, particularly for cells in the colon. It can also help to protect vulnerable cells against free radicals, which can be harmful to the body. Moreover, turmeric can help the body to expel mutated cells that may have developed cancer already.

Turmeric Helps to Lower Cholesterol

High cholesterol is linked to many serious disorders. Research shows that the curcumin oil in turmeric helps to lower cholesterol levels by encouraging the liver to produce more receptors that produce lower cholesterol.

*If in doubt, check with your medical professional before adding extra turmeric to your diet. In some cases, it may interfere with medications and cause negative effects. For instance, its ability to slow blood clotting could be dangerous for anyone taking anticoagulant medication.
