5 Spices to Boost Digestion

We often think of spices just for flavor, but many are proven to benefit our health – especially the digestive system. Read on to learn of five common spices that can both enhance the flavor of your meals and help with digestion.

5 Spices to Boost Digestion

Black pepper

This spice contains antioxidants and is also antibacterial. When black peppercorns are ground, the chemical piperine is released and stimulates digestion by increasing saliva and gastric juices, aiding digestion and reducing gas and bloating. Preserve black pepper’s nutritional qualities by storing whole peppercorns in a dark, cool and dry location. Add whole peppercorns during meal preparation or grind just before eating.

Cardamom

Commonly used in Middle Eastern dishes, cardamom can also be added to tea and used as a drink. This slightly sweet spice not only helps digestion by reducing flatulence, but can also be used as an antiseptic when applied topically to help heal infections.

5 Spices to Boost Digestion

Coriander/Cilantro

You’ll typically find Cilantro as a condiment or garnish, but for those that have IBS-D, the oil from the seed can help with diarrhea and help relax the digestive muscles. Coriander’s antioxidants also help protect cells from free radicals.

Cumin

Used frequently in Mexican and East Indian foods, this spice not only provides a unique flavor to food, but also reduces flatulence and aids in digestion. While you’re still chewing, the compound Cuminaldehyde, found in the essential oil, kicks the digestive process into high gear by activating the salivary glands. Secondly, another compound called thymol helps with digestion and stimulates the enzymes, bile, and acid in the stomach and digestive tract for a more complete breakdown of food. When mixed with water and drank, cumin can help relieve a stomach ache.

Turmeric

Used for over 2,500 years in East Indian food, Turmeric can treat indigestion and excess acid. It can also stop the growth of the bacterium H pylori, a cause of stomach ulcers and even stomach cancer. Additionally, Turmeric treats a whole host of other conditions. It can be used topically on cuts, burns and bruises, and serves as a potent painkiller that is as effective as ibuprofen*.

*If in doubt, check with your medical professional before adding extra turmeric to your diet. In some cases, it may interfere with medications and cause negative effects. For instance, its ability to slow blood clotting could be dangerous for anyone taking anticoagulant medication.
