June’s Birth Flower is the beautiful Rose

Just in time for summer, the birth flower for June is the beautiful Rose. In the language of flowers, a pink rose means perfect happiness, a white rose purity, and a red rose says ‘I love you’. And Almanac.com notes that giving a bouquet of roses conveys sincere gratitude.

For the color wash on this month’s printable, I used June’s pretty Turquoise birth stone as inspiration.

History of Birth Flowers

Birth flowers have an interesting history. The earliest reference to the language of flowers is by the poet Christopher Smart, who first mentioned a language of flowers in Jubilate Agno, circa 1759-63. However, Mary Wortley, Lady Montagu, through her memoirs, introduced 18th century western culture to the concept of flowers assigned to each birth month.

Additionally, Victorians expressed feelings not considered proper to voice aloud by sharing ‘talking bouquets’.
