3 simple ways to buy farm fresh produce

It’s time for all the farm fresh summertime goodness! Cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes are on, fresh watermelon is heaven on the tongue, and herbs of every kind are growing in leaps and bounds right now. But what if you don’t have a garden of your own? Well, it’s still possible to find fruits and vegetables grown in your community. Read on for a few ways you can get fresh, locally grown produce, along with some links to help you find growers near you.

Check out your local farmers market

One good way to find local farmers is to go where local growers go to sell their goods, and that’s a farmers market! This is a good option since you’ll find many growers in one location. Some growers might have better strawberries, while others specialize in vegetables or herbs, so it’s good to have a variety of farmers to choose from. Farmers markets are in many cities and small towns, offering fresh produce, herbs, cooked food and/or beverages, fresh-cut flowers, and handmade gifts.

Try a Local CSA Program

CSA programs offer fresh produce on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. You can choose the size box you want, then you’ll receive fresh produce from a grower or CSA co-op. It’s a great way to access produce from local farms, and gives you the chance to try out different kinds of fruits and vegetables.

Use Websites and Apps

If you aren’t sure about local farmers markets or what growers are in your area, an easy way to find out is by using apps and websites dedicated to finding community growers or CSAs. The apps are useful when you travel too, since they’ll help you find local farms when on the road.

A farmers market gives you the chance to know your local farmer, and lets you take home that fresh goodness today. CSAs help to support your local growers and allows you to eat seasonal produce, as well as offers the opportunity to try new varieties. And apps will help you connect with local growers if you’re new in town or just getting started, and when you’re traveling.

Hopefully the tips and links listed above will make it easier for you to support your local economy, all while getting the best and freshest produce.
