Hello Sunflower Season

August is here and with it, Sunflower season! Though the season of bloom for many other flowers has already come and gone, this is the time of year sunflowers come into their own. Fields of sunflowers are ripening now, but you’ll also find this sunny flower popping up along roadsides and in abandoned lots. And some may call the Sunflower a weed, but their colorful blooms are a happy reminder that even in the midst of chaos, there is resilience and beauty.

I love Sunflowers

Associated with happiness and optimism, the pretty Sunflower is part of the Helianthus family of flowers, and symbolizes unwavering faith. Sunflowers are native to the Americas, and originally exported to Europe by the Spanish Conquistadors. They’re a heliotropic plant, meaning that they track the sun. And I was interested to learn that rather than one big flower, each sunflower head is actually thousands of tiny flowers. There are so many varieties and, besides being bred for their showy blooms, they’re cultivated for food, oil, and medicinal use.
